Ogden York Rite Bodies

Who We Are

The York Rite is a confederation of degree systems consisting of the Royal Arch Chapter, Cryptic Rite Council, and the Commandery of Knights Templar. As practiced in Utah, it is sometimes called the American Rite of Masonry. The name derives from an ancient operative legend that Masonry came to England through the beneficence of Athelstan at York.

Ogden York Right Bodies is home to Ogden Chapter No. 2, Ogden Council No. 3, and El Monte Commandery No. 2. under the jurisdiction of the Utah Grand York Rite of Freemasonry.

What is the Cryptic Rite?

Cryptic Masonry, known as the Cryptic Rite, is among the most revered parts of Freemasonry, completing the allegorical journey of the York Rite. While Freemasonry offers a moral framework, it does not substitute for religion. Instead, it enhances members' faith by encouraging personal growth and belief in a Supreme Being.

Historical Origins of the Cryptic Degrees

The degrees of Cryptic Masonry began almost 200 years ago and quickly gained prominence. The Grand Council of Connecticut was formed in 1819, becoming the first such council, and a General Grand Council was established in the United States in the 1870s. The degrees of Cryptic Masonry have since spread internationally.

The Degrees of Cryptic Masonry

The Royal Master Degree: As the first degree in Cryptic Masonry, the Royal Master Degree imparts wisdom through a symbolic and philosophical journey focused on King Solomon’s Temple and the Ark of the Covenant.

The Select Master Degree: Originating from a degree known in the Scottish Rite as “Intimate Secretary,” this degree brings Masons to the underground vault, completing the story of the Word’s preservation.

The Super Excellent Master Degree: Although technically outside the core cryptic degrees, this degree explores themes of loyalty, leadership, and the consequences of one’s actions, drawing on biblical history following the destruction of King Solomon’s Temple.

Symbolism and Meaning

Cryptic degrees revolve around the concept of the "Vault" or hidden knowledge. Masonic teachings, based on allegory, suggest that life's mysteries are uncovered through self-reflection and personal growth. As Masonic author Albert G. Mackey describes, “the Vault symbolizes the journey through life, leading to enlightenment and eternal truths.”

Cryptic Masonry Worldwide

Cryptic Masonry has extended beyond the United States to England, Scotland, and Canada. In Scotland, for example, the degrees are managed by the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter and incorporate additional degrees, blending American and Scottish traditions.

Community Impact and Service

Councils of Cryptic Masons actively participate in community service, partnering with Lodges and other Masonic groups. The General Grand Council’s Cryptic Medical Research Foundation exemplifies this dedication, supporting life-saving research on atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries.
